Spinning Stripes update

Wendy presented her quilt at our recent Capital Quilters club day. It is one of her two quilts she made in my class earlier this year.

It's not just about the stripes and layout.  The quilting using various coloured threads to enhance, makes this technique exciting.

A Rachel-Mary attended my spinning stripes class at Coastal Quilters  She bought the same fabric as my class sample.  She has completed her quilt and it hung in an exhibition organised by a small quilting group she used to belong to called Quiltessentials in Sherborne, Dorset, England. 

The exhibition was held in a Church hall in Longburton as part of a fundraiser for the hall, on 21/22 August.

This week Lesley popped into the shop to discuss the quilting of and thread colour for her quilt.  She attended my class with Coastal Quilters earlier this year.
The blocks below will be the centre feature of her quilt.  Lesley has decided she will quilt this section and add more blocks and borders using the joining technique of the Quilt as you Go method.

When auditioning thread for your quilting - don't just rely on the colour of the thread on the spool.  Actually unwind it a little and lay the thread onto your fabric.  Quite often darker thread is actually much lighter when unwound.

Spinning Stripes - Results from last Saturday's class

I love puzzles and especially those that you have no idea how they will turn out so Kaleidoscopes, and anything spinning fascinates me especially when using just one fabric.

Here are the results at the end of Saturday's spinning stripes class.

The majority of the day is cutting the fabric and laying out.  Only one person got her machine out near the end of the day.  The best tool for laying out is the camera on your phone.
It was fun for me is watching these quilts take form.  Everyone on this class will now look at striped fabric differently.

This fabric arrived in the shop today.  Perfect for spinning stripes.  I love the splotches of colour within these stripes.  Would look awesome with this technique.

Spinning Stripes Class with Coastal Quilters

I had an exciting day with nine Coastal Quilters today at Plimmerton School teaching my spinning stripes class.  The photos display their original fabric followed by block placement.  These blocks may not appear in their final placement, however this gives you an idea of the fun to be had with this technique. 
When you start - you have no idea how your quilt will finish - bit like a jigsaw puzzle.

Spinning Stripes (Triangles) Class and Needs List

I probably could be more creative about the name of my new class for next year.  I have been playing around with 60 degree triangles and kaleidoscopes for three years now.  This quilt is different to my other kaleidoscope type quilts because of the way the fabric is cut - lengthways as oppose to width wise.

When looking for stripe fabric for this class - try and find something that has a variant in colour and stripe shape/width.  Look at these examples:

In this two day class we cut, then layout the whole quilt before we sew. The cutting and layout will take most of the day.  The quantity of fabric you buy is up to you and your budget.  Any length from 1.5 metres upto 3 metres.  The triangle size will depend on your stripe width repeat e.g. the finer the stripe, the smaller your triangle size.  When cutting my fabric for the three quilts above I didn't use a ruler - I freeform cut.  I used the ruler for trimming my fabric edge before cutting.

Needs List:
Part one of this class:
Striped fabric (quantities as above)
Large bed sheet (flannel if possible) to layout your triangles
Pins to pin your triangles into groups and into place on your sheet (dress making pins great for this)
Rotary cutter (preferably with new blade) and cutting board
Full length ruler (optional)
60degree Triangle ruler

Part two of this class:
Sewing machine with 1/4" foot attached.
Matching sewing thread with bobbin wound ready to go
New size 80/12 sewing machine needle
Quilting pins

At the beginning of this class while we wait for everyone to get set up - take the opportunity to iron your fabric.
